(Takeo): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that Cambodia’s loans from various countries and development partners are being utilised to expand the nation's economic potential, particularly through the construction of roads and bridges. He emphasised that borrowing for infrastructure development yields direct economic benefits for the people.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Apr. 29) at the inauguration ceremony for the official use of National Roads No. 31, No. 33, and No. 41, held in Takeo Province.

Samdech Thipadei explained that the sources of income of countries around the world are primarily taxes and loans. Cambodia’s tax revenue remains relatively low, in contrast to many countries that impose high or even overlapping taxes.

As of the end of 2024, Cambodia’s total public debt stood at over USD 12 billion, representing approximately 25.8 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Of this, domestic public debt amounted to USD 115 million, while external debt exceeded USD 12 billion.

Samdech Thipadei affirmed that Cambodia’s debt remains under control and the Royal Government of Cambodia use foreign loans to build infrastructure and promote national development.

“This infrastructure creates economic opportunities, money flows into citizens’ pockets and into the state budget. That is how we share the benefits of development,” the premier continued.

The premier concluded that when roads are built, economic activity becomes more dynamic and prosperous.
