(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that social media now plays an increasingly influential role, enabling citizens to expose shortcomings in law enforcement practices across all institutions.
The premier spoke on Saturday (May 3) during the 7th gathering and solidarity dining with journalists at CCIC.
Samdech Thipadei referenced a recent incident in Italy, where a wealthy businessman was deceived by scammers using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The fraudsters impersonated the Italian minister of defence through AI and successfully defrauded the businessman of one million euros. He cited this case as a clear example of the growing risks posed by AI and stressed the urgent need to strengthen ethical standards among those who develop and manage such technologies.
The premier further emphasised that technological tools, including AI, serve only to enhance the capabilities of the media—making it more powerful, faster, and capable of broader outreach. As such, the exercise of media power, as enshrined in the Constitution, should be used to contribute to national development and to scrutinise the performance of officials across all three branches of government. He underlined that public authorities must respond to the concerns of the people, who now have the tools to voice their grievances through various media platforms.
“Nowadays, the use of social media has significantly expanded the rights and influence of citizens in expressing themselves and exposing misconduct. It allows for swift action and faster problem-solving. This is a reality,” the premier underscored.
