(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged the Cambodian public to prioritise disease prevention instead of waiting until illness occurs to seek treatment. He also encouraged citizens to participate in sports and regular physical activity to promote overall health and well-being.

The premier spoke on Monday (May 5) during the official launch of the National Cancer Control Plan 2025-2030 at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

In addition, Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed authorities to increase the development of public parks to provide more spaces for exercise, making it easier for people to maintain an active lifestyle. He underlined that healthy citizens are a valuable asset to their families and the nation, whereas those with poor health may become a burden. Promoting public health through prevention requires close cooperation between the government and the people.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, “Some officials say that in our parents' generation, certain foods were restricted. Now, we have access to them, but doctors are once again urging caution. We must be mindful of our eating habits to protect our health because once health issues arise, we are no longer an asset but a burden to our families. [...] Prevention, education, and timely treatment are all critical. Most importantly, public participation plays a major role. Don’t wait until you’re ill to run to your parents, prevent illness before it happens. This is something we can all do together, along with the Royal Government and all relevant ministries and institutions. It is an important message. The health of the nation depends on its people, and the health of the people must be protected through joint efforts—by the public, the government, and all levels of authority.”

The Royal Government of Cambodia places strong emphasis on public health. Of the six key policy priorities under the seventh-mandate Royal Government, the top priority is the expansion of healthcare services to achieve universal health coverage.
