(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted that while treatment is essential, prevention plays an even more crucial role in the fight against cancer. He called for greater focus on food quality and safety—particularly through stricter control of chemical usage—to reduce cancer risks.

The premier spoke on Monday (May 5) during the official launch of the National Cancer Control Plan 2025-2030 at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

“Looking ahead, I believe we must, at the very least, build capacity at the regional level to treat cancer […]. But more importantly, we need collective participation in prevention. Relevant ministries and institutions must rigorously monitor the import of vegetables and meat, as well as the use of chemicals,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei added that public awareness campaigns are a vital means of educating the population about cancer prevention. He called for a nationwide effort to disseminate information widely on how to reduce the risk of the disease.

Additionally, the premier reiterated the need to curb tobacco use—especially vaping—which he identified as a major contributor to cancer.

Samdech Thipadei stressed that cancer has become a serious public health concern and poses significant socio-economic challenges. Therefore, the Royal Government has made the fight against cancer a top priority within the Ministry of Health's broader agenda.

According to Minister of Health Chheang Ra, Cambodia reports approximately 20,000 new cancer cases annually, resulting in around 14,000 deaths each year. These alarming figures underscore the urgency of implementing effective prevention and control measures.
