(Phnom Penh): Despite no current cases of blackleg or anthrax in livestock (cattle and buffalo) in Cambodia, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries decided to impose a temporary ban on the import of live livestock (cattle and buffalo) and meat products from all border crossings with Thailand. This measure follows reports of a fatal anthrax outbreak among livestock (cattle and buffalo) in several regions of Thailand, according to a press release received by Fresh News on May 7.
The Ministry underlined that it is closely monitoring the situation regarding the outbreak of blackleg or anthrax in Thai livestock (cattle and buffalo). While Cambodia remains free of the disease, the temporary ban has been enacted as a preventive measure. The ministry is also working closely with relevant authorities at all affected border checkpoints to strengthen inspection procedures and ensure effective implementation of the preventive measures.
The General Directorate of Animal Health and Production has also set up a rapid response network in all 25 provinces and the capital to monitor the health of livestock (cattle and buffalo) and to intervene if any suspicious cases arise. The Ministry will continue to provide regular updates and share new information on the situation as necessary.
