(Phnom Penh): On May 7, in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, the Russian Embassy in Cambodia organised an “Immortal Regiment” march.
Russian Ambassador to Cambodia Anatoly Borovik and his Spouse, Russian diplomats and members of their families, students and teachers of the Embassy School took part in the event. Russian compatriots living in Cambodia, as well as the Association of Cambodian Students from Soviet Union and Russia joined the procession.
In his welcome remarks, the ambassador stated, “Today’s event – Immortal Regiment march – is one of the ways to commemorate the deeds of our ancestors. It is a very powerful image of how people are bearing the portraits of their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents who made their contribution to the Great Victory.”
He continued, “We cannot let the war that ended 80 years ago repeat once again. Russia makes every effort to establish the system of indivisible security for all states. Only this kind of architecture is able to provide stable peace and prosperity to mankind.”
Following the welcome remarks, the attendees—including the ambassador and his spouse—laid flowers near the monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers and observed a moment of silence.
The ceremony concluded with a solemn military parade by the Honor Guard. During the procession, participants held photographs of their loved ones who had been national heroes on the battlefield.
In the evening, the commemoration concluded with a musical performance held at the Embassy Club.
The essence of this action is to preserve the memory of the feat of the Soviet people, who defeated fascism, liberated their Motherland and many European countries. Participants of the action carry portraits of their relatives - parents, grandparents - heroes who brought the Great Victory closer, fighting on the fronts or forging victory in the rear.
The “Immortal Regiment” march was first held in 2011 and has already become traditional. On Victory Day, May 9, thousands of people walk on the streets of Russian cities to honor the memory of heroic ancestors. The “Immortal Regiment” is also massively organized abroad, including in the Kingdom of Cambodia.
