(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed concern that some social media users are willing to do anything, even violate others’ rights, abandon moral and cultural values, and compromise the dignity of Khmer women, just to gain more views.
The premier spoke on Friday (May 9) during the inauguration of the Techo Santepheap Dormitory and other achievements at Svay Pope Pagoda, Phnom Penh.
Prime Minister Hun Manet raised alarm over the growing lawlessness on social media, where certain individuals are engaging in behaviour that contradicts Khmer morals and traditions, infringes upon the rights of others, and prioritises attention and income over ethical conduct, even if it means acting immorally.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, “If we stop thinking about morality and virtue, and only focus on one perspective, our society could soon face serious consequences. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors also engaged in business, just as people do today, but their actions were guided by education, ethics, and moral principles. Today, Facebook users curse each other, insult one another, act inappropriately, and manipulate content…”
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also underlined other issues stemming from social media, including young people disrespecting the elderly and some politicians resorting to unethical means to gain popularity.
“If you believe that millions of Cambodians enjoy this kind of immoral content, go ahead, but I don’t think such behaviour can represent our entire country or all of our people,” Samdech Thipadei added.
Despite these concerns, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet maintained an optimistic outlook, adding that while some content creators attempt to generate buzz and attract large audiences, it does not necessarily mean that viewers believe or are influenced by such fabricated material.
