(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that science and technology are advancing at a rapid and unstoppable pace. Therefore, in order to prevent fraud and exploitation through technological means, it is essential to enforce state laws and promote mental discipline.

The premier spoke on Friday (May 9) during the inauguration of the Techo Santepheap Dormitory and other achievements at Svay Popae Temple.

Samdech Thipadei noted that during a recent discussion with journalists, concerns were raised about how to manage the fast-evolving landscape of science and technology, particularly the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). He warned that such rapid advancement has opened the door for individuals to exploit technology for personal gain. Some people create fake images to scam others out of money, while others produce immoral or misleading content that causes confusion, even some world leaders have reportedly been deceived by AI-generated materials.

Prime Minister Hun Manet went on to ask how society can manage these increasingly dangerous challenges, especially when people from anywhere in the world including the US or Africa, can potentially cause harm to someone in Phnom Penh or Singapore in a matter of seconds through digital manipulation and technological deceit. As AI continues to evolve, it is becoming increasingly realistic and harder to distinguish from the truth.

Samdech Thipadei further underscored, "While the rapid development of technology poses real risks, it does not mean progress should be halted. Rather, scientific advancement is inevitable and cannot be stopped. To prevent large-scale harm, two key factors are essential including the enforcement of legal frameworks under state jurisdiction, and more importantly, the cultivation of education, personal responsibility, and internal moral values."
