(Phnom Penh) – The Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith said that the international community now recognises Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen as one of the most influential political figures in Southeast Asia and within ASEAN.
The spokesperson spoke on Friday (May 9) during a press conference on the outcomes of Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s official visits to Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
“Samdech Techo Hun Sen is now internationally acknowledged as a key influencer in Southeast Asia. Through Cambodia’s foreign policy and active engagement, he has contributed not only to peace within the Kingdom but has also played a significant role on the global stage,” Chea Thyrith underscored.
The Senate spokesperson highlighted two key reasons why the international community recognises both the strength of Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Cambodia:
- Samdech Techo Hun Sen is a historic leader whose contributions are beyond dispute – He liberated the Cambodian people and led the country out of prolonged conflict, establishing the peace that prevails today.
- Cambodia's dynamic foreign policy and active diplomatic engagement on the international stage.
According to Chea Thyrith, following the restoration of full peace in Cambodia on 28 December 1998, Samdech Techo Hun Sen advanced the nation by securing ASEAN membership in 1999 – a move that paved the way for expanded international cooperation.
He further noted that Cambodia, once labelled a failed state, has since risen to stand on equal footing with other nations on the global platform.
