(Phnom Penh): Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Cambodia’s sovereignty and legitimacy. He also underlined China’s commitment to assisting Cambodia in addressing external threats and pledged support in promoting Cambodia as a destination to attract more Chinese tourists.
Ambassador Wang Wenbin spoke on Tuesday (May 13) during a courtesy call with Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng at Phnom Penh Capital Hall.
During the meeting, Governor Khuong Sreng provided an overview of Phnom Penh’s history and its ongoing development, noting that the capital has made significant progress across all sectors. Most importantly, he highlighted that Cambodia continues to enjoy full peace and stability.
He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet, the Phnom Penh Capital Administration has launched a new pedestrian street (Walk Street), which has received strong public support from both local and international visitors, while maintaining excellent security and public order.
The governor went on to say that Cambodia has received substantial support from China, citing the construction of Phnom Penh’s Third Ring Road, made possible through Chinese assistance, as a major example. The road has been officially named Xi Jinping Boulevard, and it has significantly reduced traffic congestion by diverting vehicles along this new route. At the national level, China has supported other major infrastructure projects as well, including the Funan Techo Canal.
Governor Khuong Sreng underlined Cambodia’s continued adherence to the One-China Policy, describing the bilateral relationship as an "iron-clad friendship." Through this strong partnership, Phnom Penh has established sister-city relationships with several Chinese cities, allowing for mutual learning and collaboration in urban development. He also affirmed that Phnom Penh continues to uphold strong public safety, including for Chinese nationals and the Chinese Embassy.
The governor underscored, “China is a true friend with a strong and enduring relationship with Cambodia. Whenever Cambodia faces challenges, China is always there to help. During the COVID19 pandemic, for instance, China provided a large volume of vaccines. As this year is being marked as the Year of Tourism, we hope China will help further promote Cambodia to attract more Chinese tourists.”
For his part, Ambassador Wang Wenbin expressed his appreciation for the Cambodian government’s care and protection of Chinese nationals who live and work in Phnom Penh, particularly the strong security measures in place around the Chinese Embassy. He also commended Cambodian authorities and security personnel for their efforts during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Cambodia, during which order and safety were exceptionally well maintained.
He noted that the warm welcome from Cambodian citizens, authorities, and security forces during President Xi’s visit demonstrated the special nature of Cambodia–China relations, which go beyond ordinary diplomatic ties.
The ambassador expressed his hope to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of agriculture and tourism, to encourage even greater numbers of Chinese visitors to Cambodia. He also thanked Cambodia once again for its consistent adherence to the One-China Policy, noting that this year marks the 67th anniversary of Cambodia–China diplomatic relations.
