(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet received a courtesy call by delegation from the Association of Tobacco Industry in Cambodia (ATIC), led by President Barros Figueira Miguel on Tuesday (May 13) at the Peace Palace.
During the meeting, the ATIC president thanked Samdech Thipadei for allowing him and his delegation to pay a courtesy call on. He also briefed Samdech Thipadei on the association’s current situation and activities.
He highlighted that the association has contributed to creating more than 4,500 local jobs and has played a role in Cambodia’s socio-economic development. He added that the association has also actively participated in various social initiatives such as providing clean water equipment, computers, necessary supplies, and support to local communities.
The ATIC president further emphasized the association’s support for all initiatives introduced by the Royal Government of Cambodia and expressed its intention to collaborate with relevant ministries and institutions to raise public awareness about tobacco and cigarette products.
For his part, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underscored the government’s commitment to curbing the import of illegal tobacco and cigarette products, along with introducing various measures to address and respond to challenges faced by investors.
The premier also reiterated the government's focus on safeguarding public health. Relevant ministries and institutions are currently examining mechanisms to strike a balance between addressing investor challenges and promoting public health for the people.
Samdech Thipadei added that the government is emphasising public awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco and cigarette products and is encouraging tighter regulation of the distribution of illegal tobacco products to ensure lawful circulation and distribution.
In the meeting, the premier reaffirmed that the Royal Government of Cambodia will not allow investment in the production of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in Cambodia.
