(Kandal): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has praised the National Police for their collaboration with relevant institutions in disaster relief operations, particularly in response to recent fires.

The premier spoke on Friday (May 16) on the occasion of the 80th founding anniversary of the Cambodian National Police.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, “I would like to take this opportunity to express my admiration for the preparedness and operations carried out by the National Police in cooperation with various institutions in responding to disasters, especially fires.”

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also encouraged all members of the National Police to continue demonstrating resilience, patience, and dedication. He urged them to further strengthen their professional skills, technical capacity, and operational effectiveness in order to achieve the shared goal of maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of the people and the nation.

Prime Minister Hun Manet also underlined the importance of ongoing self-development, encouraging officers to become competent individuals who serve as a solid foundation and valuable asset for the country's continued progress.

It should be noted that 16 May 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Cambodian National Police. The milestone was celebrated with a grand ceremony at the Police Academy of Cambodia, located in Dei Edth commune, Kien Svay district, Kandal province. The event also featured a parade showcasing various units of the National Police.

The Cambodian National Police was established by King Norodom Sihanouk through Royal Decree No. 35 NS on 16 May 1945, under the Ministry of Interior and Political Affairs.

At that time, Cambodia had just experienced its first brief period of independence, which lasted nearly seven months, from 18 March to 16 October 1945, following 82 years under French colonial rule.

The National Police plays a vital role in maintaining public order, security, and social safety. Their duties include protecting demonstrations and public gatherings, preventing acts of terrorism, combating transnational crimes, safeguarding the legitimate government, and upholding the core pillars of the nation including Nation, Religion, King, and the Constitution.

Additionally, the police are tasked with fighting drug trafficking, combating all forms of human trafficking, enforcing immigration and road traffic laws, cracking down on forest crimes, illegal gambling, and juvenile delinquency, and serving the public with integrity.
