(Pursat): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet vowed that the police officer responsible for the fatal crash that killed a tuk-tuk driver will be prosecuted without exception, stressing that he personally oversees the enforcement of laws in all drunk driving fatalities.
The premier spoke on Saturday (May 17) during the inauguration ceremony of a new three-storey school building, along with other achievements, at Hun Sen Promaoy High School in Pursat Province.
Hun Heng, a Phnom Penh police official, caused a fatal road accident and injuring five others. A case file has since been compiled and submitted to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for prosecution.
Samdech Thipadei added, “This tragic crash involved a police officer driving under the influence, resulting in the death of a tuk-tuk driver. Our stance on drunk driving fatalities is firm—legal action must be taken without compromise. Responsibility cannot be avoided through compensation, regardless of who is involved. This case is no different from the fatal crash under the Russey Keo flyover.”
Once again, Prime Minister Hun Manet again urged the public to understand the legal process, noting that under Cambodian law, judicial police have 48 hours to compile a case file before it is submitted to court. He reaffirmed that this law is strictly enforced and applies equally to all, without exception.
On 20 January 2024, a man driving a Ford Ranger crashed into multiple motorcycles and vehicles under the Russey Keo flyover, instantly killing four people and injuring four others. He was sentenced to five years in prison and banned from driving for five years.
