(Phnom Penh): Cambodian President of the National Assembly Khuon Sudary reaffirmed Cambodia’s firm and consistent stance in upholding its commitment to an independent, neutral, and non-aligned foreign policy. The country continues to actively contribute to peacebuilding efforts and the strengthening of partnerships with other nations, guided by international law and the nation’s core interests.

The president spoke on Wednesday (May 21) during a public seminar on the Outcomes of Cambodia’s Foreign Affairs and the Current Global Context hosted by Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Information and Media (the 5th Commission) of the National Assembly in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held at the National Assembly.

She observed that, over the past decade, the international landscape has become increasingly tense and unpredictable, marked by economic crises, security concerns, and, more recently, a global trade war that continues to impact the world. The current era is characterised by intense geopolitical and economic competition, as well as technological rivalries that threaten regional stability.

“In this context, Cambodia maintains its steadfast commitment to an independent, neutral, and non-aligned foreign policy. The country remains dedicated to actively contributing to peacebuilding and strengthening partnerships with other countries, in line with international law and national interests. At the same time, our diplomacy is proactive in nature,” the president of the National Assembly underscored.

According to her, the ongoing global fragmentation, heightened geopolitical rivalries, and widening ideological divisions highlight the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation and effective leadership. This, she noted, requires a synergised approach encompassing government diplomacy, parliamentary diplomacy, party diplomacy, and people-to-people diplomacy to build dialogue, foster trust, and promote peace. Moreover, she stressed the importance of adopting a centrist approach at both national and international levels to restore trust and encourage genuine cooperation and friendship.

She further stated that Cambodia actively engages in both bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including legal implementation and legislative affairs. Through bilateral relations, Cambodia has strengthened strategic partnerships with key nations, aiming to boost trade, investment, and cooperation in areas such as culture, technology, and security. Simultaneously, its active participation in multilateral frameworks—both regionally and under the United Nations—has enabled the Kingdom to amplify its voice and influence on the global stage.

She also highlighted that since joining the United Nations in 1955, Cambodia has played an increasingly active role in global affairs, particularly in the areas of human rights, education, health, environmental protection, and sustainable development. This participation demonstrates Cambodia’s commitment to being a responsible and equal partner in the international community, upholding the principles of peace, cooperation, and respect for international law. Additionally, Cambodia continues to play a key role in building the ASEAN Community and advancing regional and sub-regional integration.
