(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet praised the working group responsible for leading tariff negotiations with the United States (US). The delegation is led by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol and Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul, along with other involved officials, for their dedicated and effective efforts.
The premier presided over the weekly cabinet meeting on Friday (May 23) at the Peace Palace.
Prime Minister Hun Manet explained that the first round of talks was primarily a meeting to express positions and clarify certain issues, noting that trade negotiations are inherently complex and require time, a situation faced by all countries.
Samdech Thipadei added with optimism, “We hope that the second round of negotiations will yield positive results.”
Cambodia and the US have agreed to hold the second round of tax negotiations in early June 2025 in Washington, D.C.
On May 13–15, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol and Commerce Minister Cham Nimul led a Cambodian delegation to the first round of bilateral trade and investment talks. They met with the US team led by Sarah Ellerman, the US Trade Representative for the Asia-Pacific. The discussions, held in a constructive and cooperative spirit, focused on a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement, including detailed reviews of its draft provisions.
