(Oddar Meanchey): Negotiations aimed at resolving an armed clash between Cambodian and Thai troops at the Emerald Triangle border area of Choam Khsant district, Preah Vihear province, have officially concluded.
The discussions, which took place at the O'Smach-Chong Chom international border checkpoint between the two nations' army commanders, lasted approximately 45 minutes and ended on Thursday evening (May 29).
According to reports, the Royal Thai Army commander-in-chief expressed a softened stance and acknowledged the incident involving armed conflict in the disputed border area. During the meeting, he also extended condolences over the death of a Cambodian soldier named Suon Ron.
However, despite the brief meeting, an official joint statement from the Cambodian and Thai military commands is expected to be released shortly by the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces' General Command.
The Cambodian delegation was led by General Mao Sophan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and Commander of the Army. The Thai side was represented by General Pana Klaewblaudtuk, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army.
The negotiations followed an incident in which Thai troops entered Cambodian territory in the Emerald Triangle area and opened fire, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. In response, Cambodian forces were deployed to the border to defend the area.
