(Phnom Penh): The General Command of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces issued a statement concerning the recent military discussions between Cambodia and Thailand, following the armed clashes between the two countries’ troops.
The meeting took place on the afternoon of May 29, 2025, between General Mao Sophan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, and General Pana Klaewblaudtuk, Commander of the Royal Thai Army, at the Cambodia-Thailand Border Affairs Liaison Office at the Chong Chom–O'Smach border checkpoint.
In the statement received by Fresh News on the evening of May 29, 2025, the General Command outlined the following outcomes from the meeting:
1. Both parties agreed to continue addressing the situation through existing mechanisms, including the Joint Border Committee (JBC), the General Border Committee (GBC) between Cambodia and Thailand, and the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning land boundary demarcation, aiming to transform the shared border into one of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development.
2. Both sides will continue to manage the situation based on the status quo, exercise patience, and resolve all issues through the JBC, which is expected to convene within the next two to three weeks, in order to maintain good bilateral relations.
3. The Cambodian side proposed mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and urged avoidance of hostile actions such as those that occurred on the morning of May 28, 2025.
4. Cambodia affirmed that it will neither retreat nor remain unarmed at the site of the recent clash, as it has maintained a presence at that location since before the signing of the 2000 MoU on land boundary demarcation between Cambodia and Thailand.
Both parties agreed to and accepted the four points above, and the meeting concluded at 16:15 on the same day.
