(Tokyo): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged the public and media to rely solely on official information issued by the Ministry of National Defence regarding border-related matters, in order to prevent confusion and the spread of misinformation.
The premier spoke on Saturday (May 31) during a meeting with Cambodian community in Japan.
Samdech Thipadei explained that updates concerning injured or fallen soldiers at the border must come from the Ministry of National Defence—the designated authority responsible for disseminating such information. He clarified that the Ministry is not withholding any facts but is committed to ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of the data before releasing it to the public.
“I therefore urge everyone, with regard to the developing border situation, to follow only the official Facebook page of the Ministry of National Defence. Otherwise, confusion will increase. The problem arises when people rely on Thai media outlets, which at times exaggerate our casualty numbers, creating unnecessary mistrust among Cambodians. This is a serious concern,” the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei also emphasised that although soldiers on the frontline are free to express their thoughts, they must not share sensitive details about troop positions. Before any military operation, forces need to assess the opposing side’s troop strength, equipment, weaponry, and capabilities. Revealing our own positions is akin to handing the enemy a map—eliminating the need for them to conduct their own intelligence work.
Samdech Thipadei added, “I call on everyone, especially our armed forces, to strictly adhere to military protocols. Keep the whereabouts of our troops and the details of our weaponry confidential. We must be fully prepared to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity by all necessary means. If war can be avoided, we will avoid it. But if not, we must be prepared to fight and win, and to protect the lives of our soldiers. That is our mission.”
