(Tokyo): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reacted to opposition groups attempting to demoralise Cambodian troops through divisive rhetoric, particularly by drawing comparisons between commanding officers and rank-and-file soldiers, as tensions persist along the Cambodia–Thailand border in Preah Vihear Province.
Samdech Thipadei questioned whether efforts to weaken the morale of the armed forces—especially through such comparisons—could be deemed patriotic at a time when conflict may be imminent. He stressed that in times of war, both generals and soldiers serve on the front lines, as witnessed during the border clashes of 2008 and 2011.
The premier spoke on Saturday (May 31) during a meeting with Cambodian community in Japan.
Samdech Thipadei continued, “To those who try to divide our forces at a time like this—when the risk of conflict is high—does that reflect true love for the nation? When clashes loom, what we need is victory. If we lose, we lose territory and lives. To win, morale is paramount. This is not the time to undermine the spirit of our military. What matters now is unity. Generals and soldiers must work together. The generals manage logistics, ammunition, and supplies. In 2008 and 2011, though I was not directly leading combat operations, I still travelled to Preah Vihear to support the logistics effort.”
On the occasion, the prime minister further explained that the military consists of specialised units, including logistics teams responsible for supply chains and artistic divisions that provide entertainment and morale support, in addition to combat units.
Premier Hun Manet emphasised the government’s commitment to the welfare of frontline troops, noting that their rations are nearly double those of rear-line forces. He added that policies are being developed to provide housing and land for soldiers.
The premier concluded by appealing to all Cambodians to support and encourage the armed forces, asserting that such acts are a true expression of patriotism. He affirmed that the Royal Government, the Ministry of National Defence, and the Cambodian armed forces remain committed to overcoming challenges and defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
