(Tokyo): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet voiced concern over opposition groups that attempt to undermine the morale of the armed forces amid ongoing border tensions. He noted that during times of conflict, adversaries often disseminate casualty figures in an effort to weaken the opposing side’s spirit.

The premier spoke on Saturday (May 31) during a meeting with Cambodian community in Japan.

Samdech Thipadei underlined that maintaining troop morale is critically important and urged the public to exercise caution when receiving or sharing information, as it can directly affect soldiers on the frontlines.

Prime Minister Hun Manet underscored, “On the battlefield, whether in past or present conflicts, one side often exaggerates the casualties suffered by the other side to break their morale, while downplaying or hiding their own losses. If ten of their troops are killed, they claim only one. Just recently, did any Thai media report their own casualties? No, they only reported ours. Yet some of our own people, in the name of freedom of expression, actively seek out such information from Thai sources to report here.”

The premier added, “Do you truly have good intentions, or do you simply not understand the psychology of our troops when you publicise their losses? The Ministry of National Defence plays a vital role in managing this type of information. Reporting on casualties should not be about making headlines, it must be based on thoughtful consideration, accurate data, and appropriate timing.”

Prime Minister Hun Manet also called for respect toward military protocol, particularly regarding operational confidentiality, which he said is crucial for safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and the lives of soldiers.

Samdech Thipadei expressed his appreciation to citizens who have shown interest in joining the armed forces, saying he deeply values their patriotic spirit. He affirmed that the military is fully equipped and well-supported by the government, with no shortages, and urged the public to refrain from actions that could demoralise or harm the troops.
