(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed that the Royal Government will submit a complaint to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to address and resolve the border dispute with Thailand—regardless of whether Thailand agrees to participate in the proceedings.

The premier spoke on Monday (Jun. 2) during the inaugural joint congress of the National Assembly and Senate on social protection, the informal economy, and agriculture.

“Due to the ambiguity surrounding the border issue, including the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2000, even if Thailand does not agree to bring this matter before the ICJ, Cambodia will still proceed with filing a complaint to resolve and eliminate the dispute altogether. This is to prevent further confusion and, most importantly, to avoid provocations by a small group of extremists in both Thailand and Cambodia that could potentially lead to armed clashes or confrontation,” the premier underscored.

He added that, despite Cambodia’s efforts to resolve the matter peacefully through technical mechanisms and in accordance with international law, the Kingdom reserves the right to defend its territorial integrity by all means, including the use of armed force should there be any attempt to violate Cambodia’s sovereignty through military means.
