(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that Cambodia has lost substantial portions of its territory throughout history and now seeks only to defend what remains, with no intention of claiming the land of others.

Samdech Techo spoke on Monday (Jun. 2) during the inaugural joint congress of the National Assembly and Senate.

“Cambodia does not covet the territory of any other country. We have already lost significant parts of our land. We are not demanding to reclaim what was lost—we simply wish to protect what remains. No one should be allowed to seize it,” Samdech Techo underscored.

He further explained that Cambodia has made successful progress in border negotiations with Viet Nam, with markers placed along 84 per cent of the shared boundary, while discussions continue on the remaining 16 per cent. Both sides, he noted, have respected each other’s positions throughout the process. Similarly, Cambodia and Laos have agreed on 86 per cent of their border, with ongoing talks over the remaining 14 per cent, conducted in a spirit of mutual respect.

However, regarding the Cambodia–Thailand border, Samdech Techo pointed out that there has been no substantial progress for the past 25 years beyond the location and identification of markers. He warned that unresolved areas of dispute will persist if left unaddressed.

The Senate president emphasised that Cambodia’s decision to pursue legal action should not be misconstrued as a breakdown in Cambodia–Thailand cooperation across various sectors. Legal matters are legal matters, but bilateral cooperation and friendship between the two countries should and will continue.
