(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote a message responding to threats from certain Thai extremist groups seeking to cut off electricity and internet supply to Cambodia.

Samdech Thipadei wrote on his social media on Thursday night (Jun. 12) as follows:

“Recently, various social media platforms in Thailand have circulated information related to threats from certain extremist groups in Thailand calling for a cutoff of electricity and internet supply to Cambodia.

To avoid prolonging the issue or creating difficulties for the Thai side in making such a decision, Cambodia has resolved to independently ensure its own electricity and internet provision.

Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, reported to me earlier that starting from midnight tonight, all optical cable network companies and internet service providers in Cambodia have ceased purchasing internet bandwidth from Thailand, as we now have the capability to fully supply internet services on our own.

Additionally, Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, has already confirmed Cambodia’s capacity to independently provide its own electricity.

Beyond the two aforementioned ministries, I have instructed other relevant ministries and institutions in Cambodia to assess and prepare contingency measures to introduce further responses in the event of additional threats or disruptions targeting Cambodia.”
