(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen announced that he would personally sponsor scholarships for Cambodian students currently studying in Thailand, in the event they are expelled or face discrimination.

Samdech Techo spoke on Monday (Jun. 16) in a special message.

Samdech Techo said that this measure is meant to provide an alternative solution if Thailand decides to terminate scholarships. He added that students who are permitted to continue studying or who are not mistreated may proceed with their studies as usual.

“If the situation becomes unbearable, they should return to Cambodia, where they will be offered scholarships to continue their education. If the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Royal Government are unable to offer support, I will personally fund their studies,” Samdech Techo affirmed.

He also emphasised that beyond concern for students, the Royal Government of Cambodia under the leadership of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet is also prioritizing the welfare of Cambodian workers and citizens residing and working in Thailand during this sensitive period.

Furthermore, as both Senate president and president of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, Samdech Techo Hun Sen reiterated his call for Cambodian nationals living or working in Thailand to return home, stressing that they should not be subjected to humiliation by Thai extremist groups.

He affirmed that even undocumented Cambodian nationals will be fully accepted by the Royal Government. In cases where documents are necessary, they may be obtained through Cambodian embassies or consulates, which also provide labour-related services.
