(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that in recent months, Cambodia demonstrated considerable patience in response to provocative actions and rhetoric from Thai politicians, military officials, and nationalist groups regarding the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Jun. 17) at the Closing of Extraordinary General Assembly of Cambodia Scouts in Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet emphasised that while Cambodia initially responded to these extremist provocations with restraint and through appropriate diplomatic channels, the narrative has since shifted, with some now accusing Cambodia of being the aggressor.

“Let me make it clear. Cambodia’s engagement in the border issue has never been aggressive. Over the past months, we have shown considerable patience. It has been Thai politicians, extremist opposition figures, and at times even the military, who have claimed various areas using unilateral maps—one day threatening to cut electricity, the next to sever internet access, then to build a border wall. Is this what professionalism look like?” the premier underscored.

“Cambodia remained silent and extremely patient. We do not want conflict. But sometimes, when we remain silent, they escalate. And when we do respond, we are accused of being unprofessional or of provoking the situation,” the premier added.

It is worth noting that in response to the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute, the Cambodian side has consistently opted for peaceful mechanisms, including bilateral negotiations and legal resolution through the International Court of Justice (ICJ). However, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces remain fully prepared to defend the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against any form of aggression.
