(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet declared that the Royal Government is addressing the border issue with Thailand with patience and transparency, firmly affirming that Cambodia has not sold any land or ancient temples to any foreign country.
The premier spoke on Tuesday (Jun. 17) at the Closing of Extraordinary General Assembly of Cambodia Scouts in Phnom Penh.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet called on all levels of civil servants and Cambodian citizens to continue placing their trust in the Royal Government’s handling of the border matter with Thailand.
The prime minister assured the public that the Royal Government is taking full responsibility for protecting national interests, safeguarding territorial integrity, prioritising the welfare of the people, and upholding the nation’s honour on the international stage.
“Cambodia has not sold any land or temple to anyone. Even before the Royal Government or Samdech Techo Hun Sen had responded to the border issue with Thailand, there were already baseless accusations claiming the Hun family had sold national land. Political action does not need to be loud or reckless. What matters is sovereignty and clarity. [...] I urge all citizens and civil servants to continue trusting the Royal Government to manage this complex issue. Rest assured, we will defend our territorial integrity and the interests of our people,” the premier underscored.
The head of government also explained why Cambodia has not responded immediately to threats and provocations from the Thai military amid the ongoing border tension. He emphasised the need for thorough analysis and a clear understanding before taking action. For example, in response to threats to cut off electricity and internet connections, the Cambodian Government did not retaliate with rhetoric, but instead took swift steps to reduce dependence on Thailand and pivot towards domestic alternatives.
In this context, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted the importance of building national and human capacity across all sectors to ensure Cambodia’s self-reliance and sovereignty ultimately aiming to eliminate any foreign threat or insult to the nation and its people. He concluded by stating that the leadership of the Royal Government is defined by maturity and clarity, and urged the public to maintain their confidence in the Royal Government.
