(Phnom Penh): In response to the Thai prime minister’s criticism that the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet's use of Facebook for official communication is "unprofessional," Samdech Thipadei firmly defended his approach, asserting that issuing messages via Facebook is both appropriate and effective. In today’s digital era, global leaders frequently use social media to communicate with the public.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Jun. 17) at the Closing of Extraordinary General Assembly of Cambodia Scouts in Phnom Penh.

“In the past, I have released messages via Facebook. Samdech Techo [Hun Sen] has done the same. Occasionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issues statements on the platform. These messages help communicate directly with the people. I believe the other side, including the Thai media, is closely monitoring this. Just yesterday, I saw some Thai politicians accuse Cambodian leaders such as Samdech Techo and myself of engaging in ‘unprofessional politics’ because we use Facebook,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet responded, “What exactly does ‘unprofessional politics’ mean? Let’s be clear, leaders must maintain communication with their citizens at all times, particularly during complex situations. Silence is not an option.”

He explained that in earlier eras, political communication was conducted through print newspapers, television, or radio. However, in the digital age, platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok are now standard tools used by global leaders, including the president of the United States and even Thai leaders themselves. He added that such platforms ensure clarity and rapid communication.

Samdech Thipadei further emphasised that the Facebook posts he shares are directed toward the public and are politically relevant. He also addressed ongoing border tensions, noting that social media is a practical tool for reaching Cambodian migrant workers abroad who may wish to return home.

“Sometimes when I issue a directive, officials receive it, but citizens may not. However, when the message is posted on Facebook, many citizens see and share it. This allows information to spread quickly. That is why this approach is valid and professional,” Samdech Thipadei concluded.
