(Siem Reap): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed that aside from the areas of the Emerald Triangle, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, and Ta Krabei Temple, the Royal Government of Cambodia continues to uphold its position of resolving bilateral issues with Thailand through peaceful means.

The premier spoke on Monday (Jun. 23) at the closing of the Central Committee Meeting of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) in Siem Reap province.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet emphasised that while Cambodia firmly adheres to bilateral negotiations with Thailand, it does not display weakness or tolerance for any actions that may be construed as disrespect or contempt by the Thai side.

“We are still pursuing bilateral negotiations on matters such as border issues, excluding these four areas. Regarding economic and military affairs, we continue to maintain open channels for bilateral engagement. However, certain conditions apply. Should there be any outbreak of armed conflict, we will raise the matter before the United Nations Security Council,” the premier underscored.

According to Samdech Thipadei, aside from the four aforementioned areas, Cambodia remains committed to a bilateral resolution approach with Thailand. However, the kingdom will not tolerate any arbitrary or disrespectful actions. For instance, in response to Thailand’s unilateral closure of border checkpoints and the imposition of restricted crossing hours, Cambodia has consistently responded with measured diplomacy to safeguard its national dignity and honour.

In this context, the premier highlighted that Cambodia has taken steps such as cutting electricity and internet services, closing checkpoints, and banning the import of vegetables and fruits. More recently, Cambodia has also suspended fuel imports from Thailand. Nonetheless, the kingdom remains capable, self-reliant, and not dependent on neighbouring countries for its survival.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that restoring the previous status quo at the border would be straightforward. First, reopen the checkpoints, then proceed with discussions on military withdrawal. He added that the key to resolving the border issue lies in Thailand’s hands. Before initiating negotiations with Cambodia, Thailand must first reach an internal consensus. Any party wishing to discuss the reopening of border checkpoints must understand that Cambodia will act solely in accordance with its national interests.
