(Siem Reap): Speaking on Monday (Jun. 23) at the closing of the Central Committee Meeting of the UYFC in Siem Reap province, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Commerce to inspect goods and oversee their distribution in markets. Special attention must be given to price control to prevent opportunistic price hikes during this period.
“At this time, I urge the Ministry of Commerce to manage prices and oversee other controls to prevent opportunism. The ministry must monitor both the quality and prices of goods,” the premier underscored.
Simultaneously, Samdech Thipadei appealed to sellers of vegetables and fruits not to exploit the situation by imposing excessive price increases, which would burden the public. Domestic consumers must unite during this period. However, the premier expressed confidence that Cambodian traders will not raise prices unjustifiably at this time.
It should be noted that the Royal Government of Cambodia has implemented several countermeasures in response to insults and threats from the Thai military, including a complete suspension of imports of certain goods such as vegetables, fruits, all kinds of beverages, fuel, and gas from Thailand following the border confrontation and repeated unilateral decisions by the Thai military.
With some imports cut off, the Royal Government has shifted its focus to promoting the use and support of local products. Cambodia possesses sufficient capacity and independence to live without reliance on neighbouring countries, as domestic supply can cover goods previously imported.
