(Preah Vihear): Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen noted that in this status quo, Thailand should seek new leadership, as the country is currently embroiled in disputes with nearly all of its neighbours. Cambodia is not the last country to have closed its border with Thailand.

Samdech Techo spoke on Thursday (Jun. 26) during his meeting with citizens who had fled from the tense Cambodia–Thailand border areas in Preah Vihear province.

Samdech Techo emphasised during the tenure of former Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, which lasted more than 10 years, there were no such issues, and relations between Cambodia and Thailand reached their peak. In contrast, the current situation sees Thailand in conflict with almost all neighbouring nations, and Cambodia’s recent border closure should not be viewed in isolation.

“I hope a new prime minister will soon emerge to manage the situation, and we will prepare to work with the next Thai leader. We do not interfere in Thailand’s internal affairs, but I understand that the Thai people themselves are now also calling for new leadership,” Samdech Techo underscored.

“From my observation, within three months, there will be a new prime minister taking office. Let’s wait and see. If I’m wrong, dismiss it as a mere guess, but I believe I’m likely right. The Constitutional Court or Thailand’s Parliament will not allow such a person to continue leading the country. It’s even unclear now whether the prime minister or the military truly holds power. Regardless, we respect the decision of the Thai people,” Samdech continued.

It should be noted that since the incident on 28 May 2025, the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute has not yet returned to normalcy. The Thai military has unilaterally imposed pressure on Cambodia, including threats to cut internet access, electricity, trade, adjust border crossing hours, and completely close border checkpoints.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia’s stance in filing a complaint to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). On 15 June 2025, the Royal Government of Cambodia formally submitted a request to the ICJ to intervene in resolving the ongoing territorial disputes surrounding Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple, and the Emerald Triangle area. Cambodia remains committed to international law and holds no intention of encroaching upon the territory of any other country. However, Cambodia reserves the right to use armed force in the event of any territorial aggression.
