(Preah Vihear): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen said that Cambodia is awaiting the appointment of a new prime minister in Thailand, which may bring a resolution to the border dispute between the two countries. He emphasised that a solution can only be achieved if the incoming Thai prime minister has the genuine will to resolve the issue.

Samdech Techo spoke on Thursday (Jun. 26) during his meeting with citizens who had fled from the tense Cambodia–Thailand border areas in Preah Vihear province.

"We are waiting for Thailand’s new prime minister to negotiate with Cambodia. Right now, it's unclear who holds real power. We do not know who to negotiate with. Is it the army or the political party or who is behind the political party or the prime minister?" Samdech Techo underscored.

Samdech added that the current situation in Thailand suggests that only when a new prime minister assumes office will there be the goodwill necessary to resolve issues with Cambodia. Cambodia is ready to cooperate with the next Thai Prime Minister.

Samdech also pointed out that the hope for a new prime minister is not only held by Cambodia but also by the Thai people themselves.

At the same time, Samdech Techo stressed that Cambodia does not view Thailand as an enemy and has never supported the Red Shirt or Yellow Shirt factions. Instead, Cambodia works with all political actors who come to govern Thailand.

He further recalled that during the tenure of former Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who led Thailand for nearly ten years, Cambodia–Thailand relations were stable and reached their highest level. Despite his military background, Prayut strengthened solidarity with neighbouring countries. In contrast, the current Thai government faces difficulties with all its neighbours, including border issues with Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, and now Cambodia, where the border has been unilaterally closed.
