(Kandal): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that while law enforcement by police officers is correct and necessary, enhancing ethics and professionalism is vital to effectively, respectfully, and efficiently serve the public.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Jun. 26) at the graduation ceremony at the Police Academy of Cambodia in Kandal Province.
“Training in ethics and professionalism for the National Police Force, as I have mentioned, is not only about enforcing the law and combating crime. Police officers serve the public every day, so it is crucial to understand and apply the law, ethics, and professionalism in practice,” the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted that in the current age of social media, police officers' actions are often photographed and commented on by the public. Therefore, it is essential that officers act with clarity and integrity in carrying out their duties.
The premier further affirmed that implementing law enforcement duties in accordance with the law is appropriate. However, officers must also embody ethics, professionalism, flexibility, gentleness, and firmness when responding to real-life situations. For instance, in cases such as a driver rushing a pregnant wife to hospital or an ambulance needing to pass through traffic, law enforcement officers must assess the situation carefully and make the right decision to facilitate urgent needs, particularly those that could save lives.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also underlined that law enforcement must strike a balance between firmness and compassion. It is essential for all police officers to adapt appropriately to each situation.
