(Preah Vihear): Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, expressed his satisfaction with the current Royal Government’s leadership, stating that in nearly two years, it has continued to perform commendably, overcoming numerous challenges.
During a meeting with local council members in Preah Vihear province on Friday (Jun. 27), Samdech Techo praised the government’s effective management of customs and domestic tax revenues, which is key sources of national income. He emphasised that the amount of money in the national treasury has increased compared to when he stepped down from government.
“When we examine customs revenue, domestic tax income, and the funds in the national treasury, I can say with confidence that the treasury now holds more money than it did when I stepped down. This proves that the new generation is composed of competent individuals who have worked diligently to raise civil servants’ salaries, increase social protection spending, and invest more in sectors such as education, healthcare, and others, while still managing to save and grow the national reserve,” Samdech Techo underscored.
He reflected on his 38-year tenure as prime minister, a period that began when the government was cash-strapped and often delayed civil servant salaries by two or three months. In contrast, he noted that today’s civil servants regularly receive salary increases and, in some cases, are paid twice a month.
On the occasion, Samdech Techo highlighted that prior to the COVID19 pandemic, the government had managed to save over USD 4 billion. The pandemic, however, necessitated significant expenditures and investments in essential infrastructure. Despite these financial demands, he stressed that the government has continued to maintain sufficient reserves.
