(Takeo): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that fish stocks have seen a remarkable increase this year, while consumer prices have remained stable that demonstrating both abundance and affordability. He noted that it is far better for Cambodia to have plentiful fish at reasonable prices than to suffer shortages and high costs.
The premier spoke on Tuesday (Jul. 1) during the National Fish Day celebration and the release of approximately 1.5 million fish into Tonle Sap Lake, held in Bati district, Takeo province.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet emphasised that the notable rise in fish populations this year has helped keep prices accessible for consumers. He attributed this success to collaborative efforts in conservation and the crackdown on illegal fishing practices. He urged the public and authorities to remain committed to these efforts, calling for sustained and consistent action to further strengthen fish stocks.
“We can see that our citizens are happy. Some vendors have even complained that there's too much fish to sell,” the Prime Minister noted. “But I say it’s better to have an abundance with fair prices for consumers than to face shortages and soaring costs. That would be the real problem.”
Samdech Thipadei continued that ensuring fish resources for all is a highly positive outcome. He called for the continued protection of both community and natural lakes to allow for further increases in fish populations. This demonstrates that Cambodia’s agricultural sector has shown strong resilience to climate change and external crises. It has ensured food security in all circumstances, avoiding any food crises, even during the COVID19 pandemic or natural disasters.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet also highlighted the long-term impact of the 2012 decision by former Prime Minister Hun Sen to eliminate fishing lots, saying this move has provided increased benefits to both the fishing community and the general public nationwide.
