(Prey Veng): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen reiterated that Cambodia and Viet Namagreed to use the deep-water principle to demarcate their borders peacefully and in accordance with international legal standards.

Samdech Techo spoke on Wednesday (Jul. 2) during a meeting with officials stationed at the international border checkpoint and inspection visit to the Meun Chey International Border Checkpoint in Prey Veng province.

On that occasion, Samdech Techo said that the demarcation of the Cambodia–Viet Nam border is the result of mutual consensus between the two parties, applying the thalweg principle, which designates the deepest part of the river as the boundary line.

“This is an international principle used to resolve disputes through peaceful means and based on international law. The Cambodia–Viet Nam border was delineated through agreements. In the past, during French colonial times, maps were drawn sometimes following Cambodian riverbanks, other times following those of Viet Nam [...] Due to these complications, both parties agreed to use the deep-water principle to determine the border, thereby establishing the boundary line from the tri-border area of Cambodia, Viet Nam, and Laos onward," according to the Senate president.

It is worth noting that the land border between Cambodia and Viet Nam extends approximately 1,270 kilometres. As of 2024, the two nations had completed the demarcation and installation of boundary markers for around 84 per cent of the border, with the remaining 16 per cent yet to be finalised.
