(Prey Veng): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen advised Samdech Pichey Sena Tea Banh to study the historical significance of the Meun Chey area with a view to constructing a memorial stupa to honour those who sacrificed their lives during the national liberation movement.
Samdech Techo spoke on Wednesday (Jul. 2) during a meeting with officials stationed at the international border checkpoint and an inspection visit to the Meun Chey International Border Checkpoint in Prey Veng province.
“I request Samdech Pichey to study the history of this place (Meun Chey) […] and consider building a stupa to honour the spirits of those who passed through here as part of the national liberation movement," Samdech Techo underscored.
Samdech Techo further noted that the Meun Chey International Border Checkpoint has historically been a significant transit point, particularly during November and December of 1977 and 1978, when large numbers of people from Memot and Ponhea Krek districts fled to Viet Nam amid Vietnamese counterattacks.
The Senate president continued, “We must leave behind historical markers of our own. Viet Nam can record and preserve their history of resistance against the Americans along the Cambodia-Viet Nam border.”
According to reports, the current Meun Chey–Tinh Bien (Cambodia–Viet Nam) International Border Checkpoint was once a traditional crossing point where communities routinely traded goods and agricultural products on both sides.
In 2010, the Royal Government of Cambodia designated Meun Chey as a border checkpoint area. Later, on 30 April 2014, it was officially upgraded to the Meun Chey International Border Checkpoint, as per Letter No. 635 SCN issued by the Office of the Council of Ministers.
