(Prey Veng): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen highlighted the mutual agreement between Cambodia and Viet Nam on the demarcation of the border line running along the waterway and into deeper water zones. He described it as an optimal win-win solution that upholds the interests of both nations.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen emphasised that resolving border issues in this way is not a simple task, but rather a solution that fosters a peaceful, friendly, and developmental border.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen spoke on Thursday (Jul. 3) during a meeting with students and teachers at the Chea Sim Komchaymear Education and Training Centre in Prey Veng province.

“In our negotiations with our Vietnamese friends to resolve border issues, the most positive outcome is that both sides have agreed to ease tensions and delineate the border line along the mouth of the waterway into deep-water zones. This is not a simple matter. The maps drawn by the French at times followed the Cambodian side of the river, which meant that if we wanted access to the water, we had to request permission from Viet Nam. In other cases, the maps followed Viet Nam’s side of the river, requiring Viet Nam to request Cambodia’s permission for access. The current solution is the best one in line with international norms, which typically define maritime boundaries by the deepest channel. The Cambodia–Viet Nam land border extends more than 1,200 kilometres,” Samdech Techo underscored.

According to Samdech Techo, Cambodia has applied the same principle in its border demarcation with Laos to ensure that people on both sides have access to water resources and can engage in fishing that is an approach that promotes peace, friendship, and cooperation.

It should be noted that the Cambodia–Viet Nam land border spans approximately 1,270 kilometres. As of 2024, the two countries have completed 84 per cent of the border demarcation process, with only 16 per cent remaining.
