(Prey Veng): Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen noted that during a meeting in Bangkok, Thailand’s acting defence minister claimed the border checkpoints weren’t closed, just had their hours adjusted. In response, Samdech Techo questioned what “open but adjusting the time” truly means.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen spoke on Thursday (Jul. 3) during a meeting with students and teachers at the Chea Sim Komchaymear Education and Training Centre in Prey Veng province.
Samdech Techo explained, “In a meeting led by Thailand’s acting defence minister, they claimed the border wasn’t closed, just the hours adjusted. But I ask both Cambodian and Thai citizens: what does ‘open but adjusting the time’ mean? It’s essentially closed. It used to open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; now it’s 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. That’s a closure in practice. So, what does that phrase really mean?”
Samdech Techo continued that in order to avoid embarrassment, Thailand should simply inform its citizens that what Cambodia seeks is the full reopening of the border to its original hours as they were before 7 June 2025. He emphasized that the adjustment of hours should be ended at all crossings. If Thailand complies, the issue will be resolved without any need for negotiation with Cambodia.
Samdech Techo added that Thailand is not only deceiving Cambodia, but also its own citizens and the international community.
On that occasion, Samdech Techo also instructed a total halt to the purchase of strategic goods from Thailand, such as electricity, internet services, fuel, and gas. He also encouraged PTT gas station owners in Cambodia to consider sourcing oil from countries other than Thailand without having to change their brand. Furthermore, he stated that it is time to stop broadcasting Thai content.
