(Kampong Thom): Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the issue involving Try Sitheng and Lucky the elephant is an organizational matter, not a national one. However, the Royal Government will not stand idly by, which is why Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, scheduled a meeting today to resolve it.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Jul. 3) during a groundbreaking ceremony of the Cambodian People's Party headquarters in Kampong Thom province.
Samdech Thipadei stated that the elephant issue is not a national matter; it's an independent, internal organizational issue, and therefore, the Royal Government will not interfere.
However, Samdech Thipadei acknowledged that the issue has stirred public sentiment. In response, Minister Dith Tina agreed to meet with Try Sitheng in an effort to find a suitable resolution. While the government respects the boundaries of institutional independence, it is mindful of the concerns expressed by the public.
It should be noted that on 30 June 2025, a social media account under the name TRY Sitheng posted a short video showing Lucky the elephant running after its owner, Try Sitheng. The video moved many viewers and prompted a wave of public appeals urging the Royal Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to help resolve the situation.
Although the matter falls under the purview of Wildlife Alliance Cambodia and not strictly within state jurisdiction, the government has made clear that it will not ignore the emotions and concerns of the Cambodian people.
Earlier this morning, Minister Dith Tina held a meeting with Try Sitheng to discuss the issue and work towards an optimal solution.
