(Phnom Penh): Cambodian President of the Senate, Samdech Techo Hun Sen received a courtesy call by Pabitra Margherita, Indian Union Minister of State for External Affairs, on Monday (Jul. 7) at the Senate.
Spokesperson for the Senate Chea Thyrith said that in the meeting, Samdech Techo highlighted the root causes of the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict, noting that Thailand often diverts its internal political challenges towards its border with Cambodia.
Chea Thyrith quoted Samdech Techo’s remarks to Pabitra Margherita as follows, “Samdech Techo emphasised that he is not a politician lacking integrity. His actions are aimed at protecting Cambodia’s territorial integrity and to prevent any form of insult to its motherland and people.” He noted that Thailand’s internal issues should not be deflected onto Cambodia.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen further explained that the border issues stem from Thailand's unilateral actions, drawing maps without bilateral agreement, the fatal shooting of a Cambodian soldier by Thai forces on 28 May 2025, and Thailand’s unilateral closure of the border.
Samdech Techo also informed the Indian deputy foreign minister that Cambodia does not wish to see war with its neighbouring country. For this reason, Cambodia has pursued peaceful negotiation mechanisms and adherence to international law, including filing a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.
