(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen expressed his appreciation for the tenure of South Korean Ambassador to Cambodia Park Jong-Wook, recognising his contributions to strengthening the relationship between the two nations.
Samdech Techo received a farewell call by outgoing South Korean Ambassador to Cambodia Park Jong-Wook on Tuesday (Jul. 15) at the Senate.
According to Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, Samdech Techo Hun Sen warmly welcomed the ambassador and fondly reflected on his tenure, commending his efforts to deepen the strong ties between Cambodia and South Korea throughout his mission. Samdech Techo also praised the ambassador’s dedication to fostering bilateral cooperation.
In response, Park Jong-Wook conveyed his sincere gratitude to Samdech Techo for the opportunity to pay a farewell call. He noted that since taking office in 2023, he had actively worked to promote the growing friendship and cooperation between the two countries. Notably, he facilitated the official visit of Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet to South Korea in 2024, reflecting an important milestone in bilateral relations.
The ambassador further stated that, during his tenure, cooperation had expanded across various ministries and sectors, with South Korea providing crucial support to Cambodia. He highlighted the provision of concessional loans to assist the Kingdom’s infrastructure development, including roads and bridges. He also expressed hope that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge would take place in early 2026.
During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen reiterated his satisfaction with Ambassador Park’s mission, noting his pivotal role in enhancing bilateral cooperation. He recalled that diplomatic ties between Cambodia and South Korea were re-established in 1996, with full official relations resuming in 1997 that an effort in which Samdech Techo himself was personally involved.
Samdech Techo emphasised that since 1997, relations between the two nations have steadily grown, particularly in the areas of economics, trade, and investment. He also recalled South Korea’s support during the COVID19 pandemic, notably its decision to maintain flight connections with Cambodia.
Ambassador Park reiterated his appreciation for Samdech Techo’s recognition of Korea’s contributions to Cambodia’s development and its pandemic support. He expressed hope that bilateral ties would continue to flourish and acknowledged Samdech Techo as a key figure in advancing relations since their re-establishment.
Lastly, Samdech Techo wished Ambassador Park Jong-Wook success in his future endeavours following the completion of his mission in Cambodia and expressed hope that he would one day return to visit the kingdom.
