(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, relevant local authorities, and institutions to take special care in preserving the "Cambodian Memorial Sites: From Centres of Repression to Places of Peace and Reflection" for the long term, recognising it as a newly inscribed World Heritage of great historical significance to Cambodia.
The premier spoke on Friday (Jul. 18) during a celebration of the inscription of “Cambodian Memorial Sites: From Centres of Repression to Places of Peace and Reflection” on the UNESCO World Heritage List, held at the National Olympic Stadium.
“The inscription of ‘Cambodian Memorial Sites’ on the World Heritage List is a victory of remembrance over forgetting, a triumph of peace over violence, and a success of reconciliation over destruction caused by war and atrocities. I urge the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, local authorities, and all concerned institutions to ensure the long-term preservation of this site, now a newly recognized World Heritage for Cambodia,” the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei continued that, based on this noble directive, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, in cooperation with relevant ministries and institutions, national and international experts, and UNESCO, conducted research and compiled technical documentation in accordance with the 1972 Convention's Operational Guidelines. The submission received high commendation from international expert bodies such as ICOMOS and ICCROM, and was officially recognized by the World Heritage Committee for its outstanding universal value as “Cambodian Memorial Sites: From Centres of Repression to Places of Peace and Reflection" leading to its formal inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Paris.
