(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that the Ministry of National Defence will undertake major military reforms, including cutting departments, merging overlapping offices, and reducing redundant units to build a leaner and more effective armed force.
Speaking at the 19th Cambodian Veterans and Retirees Day on Friday, Samdech Thipadei said the reforms will focus on restructuring, better training, and upgraded military equipment under a long-term defence strategy.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet revealed that personnel at the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces High Command have already been reduced from around 6,000 to just over 2,000, with plans to cut the number further to about 600.
He said the reform strategy aims to “reduce the head and expand the body” by streamlining leadership while strengthening frontline operational units.
