(Phnom Penh): Cambodia ranked first for its natural environment in a recent global survey by U.S. News & World Report. The report commended Cambodia for its exemplary efforts in balancing development with environmental protection. Key achievements highlighted include effective air quality management, sustainable natural resource practices, biodiversity conservation, and promotion of sustainable living.
The Minister of Environment, Eang Sophalleth, stated that this recognition is a significant honour for both the Cambodian people and the nation on the international stage in the realms of environmental stewardship and natural resource management. He further noted that Cambodia's ranking reflects the robust environmental foundation established under the leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the Acting Head of State, President of the Senate, and former Prime Minister of Cambodia.
The seventh-mandate Royal Government, led by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, views this accolade as a valuable legacy and continues to promote it. The implementation of the first phase of the Pentagonal Strategy is central to this, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable growth that has driven substantial positive change in environmental resource sectors.
According to the study published by SEA Infographics, Cambodia ranked first globally and in Southeast Asia regarding its natural environment. The nation effectively manages 73 protected natural areas covering over 7 million hectares, representing approximately 41 per cent of its total land area. These protected regions have played a pivotal role in forest conservation through enhanced law enforcement measures and the safeguarding of wildlife habitats and biodiversity.
The Ministry of Environment has actively collaborated with relevant ministries, institutions, local authorities, environmental organisations, and national and international partners to ensure sustainable management of the environment and natural resources, in alignment with government policies and strategies. Our commitment extends to strengthening the "Environmental Sector Circular Strategy," with a focus on cleanliness, greenery, and sustainability.
In addition, Cambodia has intensified its reforestation initiatives. The Ministry of Environment encourages citizens to plant and distribute at least 1 million tree saplings, thereby contributing to forest restoration, expanding green cover, enhancing climate resilience, supporting local economies, and aligning with Cambodia's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
