(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman of the Cambodian Defence Ministry, announced that the ministry categorically rejected Thai military claims that Cambodian forces were responsible for a reported gunfire incident in the Phnom Bak area of Samraong, calling the accusations false and misleading.
According to Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, the Thai Army Spokesperson Team reported at 10:40 a.m. that five gunshots were heard in the area and alleged Cambodian involvement.
The ministry categorically rejected this report, declaring it false and misleading information fabricated to incite confusion, mislead public opinion, and escalate tensions along the border.
She added that the ministry could not accept the repeated dissemination of groundless allegations by the Thai military and Thai media. These persistent fabrications not only defamed the honour of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) but also severely undermined the mutual trust established through our bilateral mechanisms.
The ministry called upon the Thai side to immediately cease the dissemination of these slanderous reports and return to the strict, full, and faithful implementation of all existing frameworks.
Cambodian Defence Ministry urged the Thai side to comply with Point 8 of the Joint Statement dated 27 December 2025, which explicitly mandates cooperation in combating fake news. Adhering to this commitment is essential to rebuilding mutual trust and fostering an environment conducive to the peaceful resolution of disputes, in strict accordance with international law and the treaties binding our two nations.
Taking this opportunity, the ministry reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s firm, sincere, and unwavering commitment to fully and faithfully respect and implement the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on 27 December 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on 26 October 2025, and all other relevant agreements. This commitment is made to ensure rapid recovery and restore normalcy, and long-lasting peace and stability.
