(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined the importance of preparedness for potential disasters associated with the upcoming rainy season.
Speaking during a Cabinet meeting on Friday morning (May 22), the premier directed the National Committee for Disaster Management to maintain close oversight of the situation, working in collaboration with provincial and municipal governors.
Samdech Thipadei highlighted the necessity for authorities to identify safe evacuation zones in the event of flooding and to prepare comprehensive emergency response measures. These measures should include allocating workforce resources, managing transportation logistics, and ensuring the availability of essential materials to support prompt, effective rescue operations, if required.
In a press release detailing the Cabinet meeting's outcomes, Prime Minister Hun Manet urged the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology to monitor weather forecasts, particularly regarding consistent monitoring of water level fluctuations. He also instructed on coordinating among relevant ministries, institutions, and local administrations to ensure timely and efficient intervention strategies.
He also instructed the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and other relevant institutions to provide food supplies and essential resources to citizens affected by crop damage and in need of assistance with recovery.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also urged government working groups at all levels to increase their engagement with farmers and to fully prepare to assist during disasters.
