(Phnom Penh): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State of Cambodia, said the country cannot successfully combat online scam operations without taking firm action against officials involved in or complicit with such crimes.

Samdech Techo spoke on Sunday (May 24) during a meeting with leaders of ministries, institutions, and local councils across Phnom Penh.

According to Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, Samdech Techo outlined two levels of disciplinary measures for officials implicated in online scams.

At the first level, officials directly involved will be removed from their positions, face possible legal prosecution, and have their assets frozen.

At the second level, authorities who fail to take action against scam operations may be removed from their posts or reassigned. Provincial and district governors who neglect their responsibilities in suppressing such crimes could also face dismissal.

Chea Thyrith quoted Samdech Techo as stating, "You cannot achieve success in combating online scams if you do not also take action against the officials and individuals connected to these schemes."

He added that those who fail to act or are complicit will receive no mercy, stressing that personal ties to national leadership cannot excuse negligence or misconduct.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also called for stronger efforts to demonstrate Cambodia’s commitment to the global fight against cybercrime, including the dismissal of provincial governors, police chiefs, and military police commanders who fail to curb online scam activities effectively.
