(Phnom Penh): Chhay Sinarith, Senior Minister in Charge of Special Missions and Head of the Secretariat of the Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), received a courtesy meeting and working discussion with Kim Chang-yong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cambodia, on Wednesday (Jun. 3).
During the meeting, Minister Chhay Sinarith acknowledged the enduring cooperation between Cambodia and the Republic of Korea across various sectors since the establishment of diplomatic relations nearly three decades ago. He highlighted the successful collaboration in security and the ongoing fight against transnational crime, including cyber scams, which have yielded positive outcomes.
The senior minister emphasised the Royal Government of Cambodia's strong political commitment and dedication to implementing measures to suppress and dismantle organised cybercrime networks, in line with the law on Combating Online Scams.
Minister Sinarith outlined the achievements of Cambodian law enforcement agencies in tackling cyber fraud, highlighting the coordinated efforts spearheaded by the Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS) under the guidance of Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Furthermore, he informed the ambassador that Cambodia plans to host an international conference to combat cyber scams in the near future, with invitations extended to various countries and international organisations to exchange experiences and best practices.
In response, Ambassador Kim expressed his appreciation to the Royal Government of Cambodia and its authorities for their robust cooperation in addressing transnational crimes, including cyber scams, facilitated through the Cambodia-Korea joint working mechanism.
The ambassador commended Cambodia's proactive efforts to combat cyber fraud, citing significant enforcement outcomes and the successful implementation of the Law on Combating Online Scams.
He remarked that Cambodia's anti-cyber scam initiatives could serve as a model for other nations, acknowledging the need for international collaboration to address cyber fraud as a transnational crime.
Ambassador Kim also praised the Cambodian law enforcement authorities and judiciary for delivering justice to a Korean student who was a victim of crime, noting the positive reception among the Korean public to the stringent penalties imposed on the offenders.
He conveyed confidence in Cambodia's ongoing commitment to effectively eliminating cyber scam activities. He reaffirmed South Korea's interest in participating in the forthcoming international conference hosted by Cambodia.
In concluding the meeting, both parties exchanged insights on current developments and future collaboration in combating cybercrime, with an emphasis on information sharing, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives for law enforcement personnel.
