(Banteay Meanchey): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State of Cambodia, announced strict measures against traders importing frozen meat from Thailand, warning that action would also be taken against officials found complicit in facilitating the imports.
Speaking at a meeting with local councils and officials from Banteay Meanchey province on Thursday (Jun. 11), Samdech Techo said he would personally summon traders for questioning to identify officials involved in allowing frozen meat shipments into Cambodia.
He added that authorities would seek to identify all traders importing goods from Thailand.
On the occasion, Samdech Techo described the measures as a response to Thailand’s actions during the ongoing border dispute, accusing Thailand of exerting economic pressure on Cambodia through threats to cut electricity supplies and suspend fuel exports.
The acting head of state further noted that despite Thailand keeping its border with Cambodia closed for nearly a year, Cambodia had not faced significant supply shortages. On the contrary, he said Thailand had lost approximately USD 10 billion in export revenue to Cambodia.
