(Phnom Penh): With the arrival of the rainy season, Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment is calling on students, teachers, civil servants, monks, private sector employees, development partners, and people from all walks of life to join a nationwide tree-planting campaign aimed at strengthening the country’s forest cover and combating climate change.

The ministry encouraged citizens across the Kingdom to take advantage of favourable weather conditions during the rainy season to plant trees in schools, pagodas, communities, public spaces, protected areas, and private properties.

The appeal forms part of the Ministry of Environment’s ongoing campaign to plant at least one million trees every year, a national effort designed to contribute to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and long-term climate resilience.

To support the campaign, the ministry announced that it has prepared five million tree saplings for free distribution to the public this year. Citizens, educational institutions, local authorities, communities, and organizations are encouraged to obtain saplings and participate actively in tree-planting activities throughout the country.

The ministry noted that under the leadership, instruction, and close supervision of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, five regional tree nurseries have been established to produce millions of quality saplings annually for distribution to the public.

The regional nurseries are designed to ensure a sustainable supply of tree seedlings while expanding public participation in forest restoration and environmental conservation efforts nationwide.

According to the ministry, increasing forest cover is a key component of Cambodia’s climate strategy and supports the country’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Tree planting plays an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide, protecting watersheds, improving soil quality, conserving biodiversity, and creating greener and healthier communities.

The Ministry of Environment emphasised that every tree planted today is an investment in future generations and called on all Cambodians to make tree planting a national movement for a clean, green, and sustainable Cambodia.

“The rainy season provides the best opportunity for tree planting. We invite all citizens, especially students and teachers, to join hands in planting trees and caring for them. Together, we can increase Cambodia’s forest cover, strengthen climate resilience, and contribute to our shared vision of a carbon-neutral Cambodia by 2050,” the ministry said.
